Every place has a story, ours began with adventure and love.

We are Tristan and Yoko Schilder, two passionate travelers who have turned a dream into reality.

Tristan is from the Netherlands and Yoko is from Japan. We met more than 20 years ago while backpacking across New Zealand; where we fell in love with each other, the country, the adventure and the magic of hiking.

In 2012, we realized our dream in New Zealand by taking over the reins of the Hanmer Backpackers, our little haven of peace in the heart of Hanmer Springs. Since then, we have welcomed travelers from all over the world to our home away from home, sharing stories, laughter and unforgettable memories. We are lucky to live in this beautiful touristy and friendly alpine village, surrounded by mountains, forests, shops, cafes and the famous thermal pools of Hanmer Springs.

There are also endless possibilities for outdoor activities; mountain biking, rafting, skiing, quad biking, hunting etc... Whether you are here to relax or to explore, we will be happy to share our best local tips to make your stay unforgettable.

Tristan is an outdoor enthusiast, he is a keen hiker and hunter. When he's not at the hostel (or soaking in hot pools), you'll probably find it on a remote trail or river somewhere in the back country. He has traveled a lot throughout New Zealand and enjoys sharing travel tips with his guests.

Yoko loves cooking, concerts, children, camping and hiking. Having traveled to more than 50 countries as a Japanese tour guide, she sometimes delights her guests with her dishes, or her homemade Japanese biscuits.
